A PAPERLESS CLASSROOM PILOT COMBINING INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION AND CORE CURRICULUM
I developed and created a new Industry Certification Academy at my middle school called eSTEAM- excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. This academy grew from my recognition of reading Florida Department of Education standards, which include school grade points, as well as funding and resources in exchange for earned Industry Certification in critical fields as identified by the State’s CAPE funding list. During the planning phase, I reviewed my student’s choices for school elective courses. Many of my students were choosing technology as their first choice option. My school technology team was nationally ranked and due to this success, we were growing in recognition as a school that trained students in future technology skills. I recognized the need for enhancements in 21st century learning, through technology inclusion within our core classes. This inclusion would grow my students in developmental skills needed for current class assignments and computer assessments as well as future job requirements. I implemented a program within my school of a “paperless” classroom in an 8th grade science and history class. All project based learning includes Adobe application in the required core class project expectations. This inclusion was possible through the use of BYOD and therefore required no extra funding for technology support in the area of device purchase. The evidence I have gathered has shown a 60% increase in student engagement within the eSTEAM courses, as compared to a standard course. Below is an example of the benchmark results for the eSTEAM class as a sample of data monitored.
Through my professional growth I have enhanced my level of competence and have enfolded my learning experience into enhancing learning opportunities for my students. Staying ever vigilant on assessing curriculum and standard based instruction is essential for the growth and development of excelling student’s academic choices and needs.
