Standard 10: Professional and Ethical Behavior

Professional ethics is integral to a school’s community rating. All administrators, teachers and staff must model professional behavior as a life choice. This is modeled by acting appropriately and treating our community, parents, students, staff and peers with trust and respect. Attending community events outside of our normal school day, provides us opportunities to model and gain respect as educators. Arriving to work and leaving work on time, and demonstrating our willingness to provide extra support for our students before and after school, gains high praise from parents and the community on professional behavior. It is the willingness of going above and beyond.

Growing in continuous learning provides educators with the tools needed to keep up with an ever changing world. Classes on technology, special education, students with other home language or ways of improving engagement in homework and the classroom are essential to growth as a professional. Educators should model lifelong learning. Staying focused on the vision that all students can learn and unpacking the barriers to learning as a key resource, will make amazing gains in both learning and respect. These skills can change a student’s life and path. A teacher can make a positive difference in the life of each and every student.

While we strive for perfection we are not ever perfect. It is just an unattainable goal to stretch out for and strive to reach. Admitting to a mistake is essential, for it builds trust and strengthens relationships. We learn from all of our mistakes and through this life lesson, try not to repeat them.
John C. Maxwell states, “A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them”

I find in my own professional life I remember the words of my father when he told me to leave the world a better place than when I arrived. I feel a great responsibility in having chosen to become an educator. I was making the choice to live my life in such a way in which others would want to follow by my example. I want all of my students to feel safe, and be inspired to grow in learning and ultimately teach others in the ethical and professional ways they were taught. The final assessment receives exemplary scores in passing on the professional and ethical behaviors, bettering mankind’s future.

SUPPORTING ARTIFACTS:

As-Is To-Be Diagram:  An  "As-Is"  and a "To-Be" is a planning tool that is in the form of a VENN diagram. I use this tool for planning purposes as I unfold items that I wish to plan such as my Leadership Plan that is attached below. This is an excellent diagram in which to see how item intersect and ideas can come from this vision perspective.

eSTEAM Flyer  to Parents: Professional behavior includes growing constantly in ones own educational pursuits. The excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (eSTEAM) academy  is an Industrial Certification academy that I began in 2014.  It combines an 8th grade Science and History classroom into a "paperless" teacher facilitated learning environment aligning all outputs to the practice of ADOBE products. In 2015, we will include 6th and 7th grade into this amazing 21st century classroom model. The artifact attached was a flyer sent out to 5th graders from our feeder elementary schools.

Community Event Attendance Brochures: This artifact contains a brochure that provides information concerning my middle school. This brochure speaks to particular interests and questions - posed from parents. I revisit this brochure for open house once a year and upgrade the facts as applicable. Parents want information on school academic course work,  before and after school care, and extra curricular activities. Providing this information helps to prepare students and parents for middle school. It is important to support new school members with items, such as brochures, to help with pertinent information such as guidance counselors and administrators contact information.

Bring Your Own Device Contract: Piloting a new program, such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for the district requires multiple documents and meetings for growing this pilot to move throughout our district. I have included a contract that I had approved by the SDMC legal department to be able to implement BYOD at my school. Having a document approved requires a great deal of tenacity and patience.

NLU Doctoral Agenda: I am in pursuit of a doctorate degree with National Louis University. I feel it is important to continue learning. Whether through the pursuit of a degree or in a learning cadre, keeping up with new educational ideas and learning trends helps educators keep up to date and provides support for the application of rigor and relevance in the classroom - culminating in greater student gains. Through my recent studies, I have read and discussed many educational books and articles with administrative peers from multiple districts. The attached article is a copy of one of my recent class "Table of Contents" listings.
